Is a drip tray a highly-stressed component of the plane? Doesn’t sound like it … so just sounds like dodgy design rather than the planes falling apart.

The 747’s are going on a good 30 years now, it’s only natural that these “non operational” parts start to wear out. I would expect to hear of more bits that are in need of replacement.
