The South Australia Liberals have accused Foxtel of damaging the reputation of South Australian and particularly Adelaide, when in a promotion recently aired the lead actor of the show "Dexter" who plays a sociopathic serial killer mentions to another person waiting at the terminal: "Adelaide has more serial killers per capita than any other city in Australia".

Liberal tourism spokesman Michael Pengilly mentioned in a joint press conference that the promotion "damages the city's reputation", while South Australia's Acting Tourism Minister Paul Caica has stated that the Opposition making such a fuss about this is only going to increase exposure of the issue nationally.

Mr Pengilly referred to information provided by an unnamed leading criminologist in Adelaide that allegedly states that serial killing in Adelaide is below the national average.

My thoughts: Who cares about the facts? The perception is there, firmly embedded in the publics mind and isn't going anywhere anytime soon regardless of what data or statistics you throw at the public. On the other hand, people don't really believe they're going to be murdered if they travel to Adelaide ... the serial killer capital of Australia is only a label, not a reality; if people avoid Adelaide, it's for other reasons.

I saw this ad yesterday and as a Dexter fan I thought it was hilarious.
